Florida A&M has been ranked number one for public HBCUs by "U.S. News and World Report."
The university has already been recognized by several publications this year. "U.S. News and World Report" recently released its list of the top HBCUs in the country and FAMU appeared at the beginning of the list.
Although ranked 10th overall, FAMU was the number one public university on the list. Spelman College in Atlanta claimed the number one overall.
According to the U.S. News and World Report website, U.S. News judges universities based specific criteria to determine the colleges that make the list. Faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources, and the alumni give-back rate .
"I'm really not surprised by the ranking when I look at the quality of our programs and the work of our outstanding faculty. We believe that our faculty, administration and staff have created a very special learning environment, this ranking only confirms what we know to be the truth-- we are the nation's leading public HBCU," said Sharon Saunders, chief communications officer for FAMU.
U.S. News works with the universities, receiving data from the colleges directly. U.S. News works with a handful of organizations including the American Association of University Professors and the U.S. Department of Education's National Center of Education Statistics to obtain information that universities did not send.
This honor adds to the growing list of acknowledgments that FAMU has received. Earlier this semester, "Washington Monthly" magaziine ranked FAMU in the Top 100 National Universities. On Aug. 10, the Princeton Review named FAMU one of the Best Colleges in the Southeast.
The Princeton Review web site also has the rankings of the "311 Green Colleges," a list on which the university also appeared.
